Summerset at Frick Park: A new, traditional neighborhood redefining Pittsburgh

The porches at Summerset

The porches at Summerset

In Pittsburgh’s East End, nestled next to one of the city’s most beautiful parks, sits a community development not normally found in an urban area. Summerset at Frick Park has all the charm of a quaint suburban community -- sidewalks, community center, swimming pool, big front porches -- with all the perks that come with city living. Located minutes from the cultural attractions in Downtown and Oakland, the hospitals and universities in Oakland, and the shopping and dining in the Waterfront, Shadyside and Squirrel Hill, Summerset at Frick Park is redefining city living. And it’s not going unnoticed.

The community was recently honored with two prestigious awards for its accomplishments in sustainable development and design. The first was for Summerset's landscape architects, La Quatra Bonci Associates, with the 2015 Merit Award in Design by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA). The ASLA Awards honor the best in landscape architecture from around the globe. The second was the Act 2 Award for “Place to Live” by the PA Brownfields Conference, a collaboration of the Engineers’ Society of Western Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

Summerset at Frick Park was one of the country’s first brownfield sites to be remediated. Probably an even more attractive selling point to those already living in the community are the home resale values, which keep breaking records and besting the rest of Squirrel Hill. According to Zillow, home values in Squirrel Hill have gone up 7.2 percent in the past year. Zillow predicts they’ll increase another 3.8 percent within the next year.

With only a dozen or so townhomes left for sale, this in-demand community is a good choice for many types of people. The homes are energy efficient, loaded with high-tech features and are perfect for electric cars.

From the young couple looking to start a family, to the empty nesters looking to downsize to a townhome with a first-floor master suite, to the urban professional looking to get out of traffic and into a bigger space, the high-quality townhomes in this neighborhood make this community within a community an attractive place to live.
