RMU receives $500,000 for high tech videoconferencing center

Robert Morris University has received a $500,000 grant from the United States Steel Foundation for the creation of a state-of-the-art videoconferencing center for its School of Business.

The U.S. Steel Videoconferencing and Technology Resource Center is part of RMU’s $4 million business school expansion. (For the Pop City story, click here.)

In addition to its educational component at RMU, the center will serve the Pittsburgh region through workforce training and virtual development programs.

The videoconferencing center will include multimedia computer workstations, enabling students to learn the software and databases used to communicate and conduct virtual meetings. It will also link the school’s undergraduate programs in Moon Township to its graduate programs at RMU’s downtown campus.

“This room will have videoconferencing, computers and software that will allow users to interact in real time among multiple locations and prepare our business students for global virtual organizations,” says Derya Jacobs, dean of the School of Business and professor of operations research.

Pittsburgh businesses will benefit too. The center will serve as a resource for companies and organizations by providing corporate training and virtual seminar capabilities, Jacobs adds. “Pittsburgh business who would like to learn about these technologies can take advantage of workshops or schedule or facilities to conduct their own seminars.”
