CMU roommates turned business partners, Patrick McGregor and Matt White made the bold move of leaving their safe jobs to start a data security company in 2003. Now the risk is beginning to pay off.
Their company, BitArmor, has grown at a phenomenal pace having doubled its size to 30 employees in the past year. And the future looks bright. The company expects to keep growing, expanding its sales force, and hiring across the board in the next 18 months. No wonder Network World magazine named BitArmor one of the Top 10 Security Companies to Watch.
“Things are going well,” reports McGregor, president and CEO, whose not doing badly himself having been named by American Venture Magazine on the Top 40 under 40 list this year. “Pittsburgh is a great place to get a company off the ground. We plan to stay here for good. The biggest problem we face is trying to choose between the opportunities, which is a good problem to have.”
BitArmor closed on its first large companies this year. Although McGregor can’t name names, customers included multi-billion dollar retailers, manufacturers and healthcare companies. “We’ve demonstrated that our software is applicable to lots of markets.” The firm has also moved from its space in Oakland to the 19th floor of Gateway Center, a location that overlooks Heinz Field.
“We think it’s great that we’ve doubled. We will continue to grow in engineering, sales, and marketing. Our technology is ahead of the marketplace and competition. To maintain that edge, we will look to hire top notch engineers.”
