Symposium offers introduction to high performance computing

When it comes to gaining a competitive edge in the global market, high performance computing (HPC) is the key, says Steven Zylstra, president and CEO of Pittsburgh Technology Council. “To out-complete other nations, we have to out-compute them.”

The critical challenge now is to bring HPC to small- and medium-sized businesses in Pittsburgh, and that’s what Zylstra, the Pittsburgh Technology Council (PTC) and the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center PSC) is all about.

On Friday, April 20th, the PSC and PTC will team together to present  “An Introduction to High Performance Computing: A Symposium for Regional Industry” at the Sheraton Station Square.

“High-performance computing can help companies reduce costs by minimizing the need to build physical models, by allowing more thorough testing of designs before building, and by creating the ability to develop more robust processes and higher quality products,” explains Zylstra, also a member of the Council on Competitiveness (CoC), a national organization of CEOs, university presidents and labor leaders committed to promoting U.S. economic growth. “By performing more calculations per second and moving from design to production in a shorter timeframe, high performance computing can help speed time to market, which is a critical factor to compete globally.”

The keynote speaker for the half-day symposium is Suzy Tichenor, vice president and HPC project director for the CoC. To register, call 412-918-4229. See www.pghtech.org/events for more information.
