Pittsburgh-based
DeepLocal was recently named one of the “Top 40 Under 40” in
American Venture Magazine.
Formed in September of 2006, DeepLocal’s information mapping
platform—MapHub—garnered them this recognition and has landed them on
MSNBC, CNN, BBC, and other major news outlets.
American Venture
Magazine awards 40 Under 40 to a “remarkable selection of those
talented young leaders who, with deep understanding of today’s fast
changing technology, had the extraordinary ability to develop a new
variety of business model with a vision for the future and community
involvement…at a very young age.”
DeepLocal’s CEO Nathan Martin
says of the award, “It’s nice to have recognition. A lot of what we’re
working on is stealth. It’s tough to promote things because a lot of
our stuff is under wraps.”
The collaboration started as an artist residency at the
Studio for Creative Inquiry
at CMU. “The most interesting thing about us right now is that we come
from an art background,” says Martin. “We went from a general arts
practice to a research focus. It changed the way we got funding. We
went from punk rock kids to becoming more legitimate and academic.”
“Our office space is dirt cheap. We found support right off the bat from the
Idea Foundry.
They’re helping me become a CEO. We started out with three people and
now our team is up to eight. We’re recruiting heavily for web
developers, cartographers, systems programmers. We’re actively
interviewing. There’s no other city where, as an artist, I could have
accomplished what I have here in Pittsburgh.
