The Carnegie International may be bringing some of the world’s most compelling contemporary artists to town, but to check out the local talent, head to the
2008 Pittsburgh Biennial.
On Saturday, dual opening parties at the recently merged
Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and
Pittsburgh Filmmakers will shine a spotlight on the best and brightest that the region’s active arts scene has to offer.
The biennial bash kicks off at the PCA at 5:30pm, and winds up with a robot party at PF. The event will feature DJ Edgar Um Bucholtz, an Art Olympic Theatre Gallery Challenge led by Tom Sarver and a culminating Spacedelic Dance Party. Take a break from all of the art observing, to enjoy spirits and creative fare, experience live performance art and digital projections, and dance to DJs.
On view through August 24, the 2008 Biennial presents a continuum of visual arts from still to moving images, with new work by 40 of Southwestern Pennsylvania's most visionary artists. Encompassing both campuses of PF/PCA, the exhibition includes two new components—a cinema program and a performance art series. Exploring the evolving nature and concept of art, the biennial reflects a particular moment of the Pittsburgh art scene via a wide spectrum of mediums, themes and styles.
Participating artists, including Paper Rad, Kim Beck, Nicole Czapinski & Bryan Kyckelhahn, and the Orgone Archives, embrace tradition in contemporary culture while mastering new technologies.
Ditch the car and hop aboard the event’s shuttle bus, which will run between the PCA in Shadyside and PF in North Oakland.
