Bringing together cleverly-themed readings, lively special guests, films, music, book signings, and plenty of libations and socializing, the always edgy
American Shorts Reading Series kicks off its 2008 season with
The Anatomy of Baseball, featuring an all-star lineup: broadcaster Lanny Frattare, NPR’s Stefan Fatsis and editor Lee Gutkind.
In collaboration with the Pittsburgh-based
Creative Nonfiction Foundation, the series' season opener takes place on May 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the Carnegie Library Lecture Hall, where Frattare, Fatsis and Gutkind will read selections from new essays on America’s beloved pastime.
Musicians from the
Pittsburgh Banjo Club will provide an all-American downhome soundtrack to the night's activities. Rounding out the literary evening will be a screening of
Kings on the Hill, Rob Ruck’s award-winning documentary chronicling Pittsburgh’s Negro Baseball Leagues.
