Fresh off our G-20 hosting duties, Pittsburgh is now set to host the United Nations Environment Programme's World Environment Day in 2010.
"Civic and corporate officials who announced Pittsburgh's selection for the U.N. event touted it as an opportunity fresh on the heels of the G-20 summit for the city to share its story of transformation from gritty industrial town to a center for high-tech and green industries," writes Joyce Gannon of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
The event, created by the U.N. General Assembly in 1972, takes place annually on June 5. Activities surrounding World Environment Day--such as rallies, school competitions and arts performances--begin with Earth Day on April 22 and continue until the event.
There will be six regional sites worldwide next year; Pittsburgh will host World Environment Day for North America. It will be the fourth time the event was held in North America. Previous host sites on the continent were Omaha, Neb.; Barrow, Alaska; and Chicago.
