United Way of Allegheny County sees increased givings of $31.2M

The national trend toward charity may be down, but Pittsburghers are donating more than ever to help those in need. Despite the weak economy, the United Way of Allegheny County reports increased donations from the previous year.

This year, United Way raised $31,231,711, compared to $31,022,233 during its 2007 campaign. To achieve this slight increase, United Way focused on local leadership groups and corporate campaign managers, as well as on increasing the number of donors. More than 58,000 donors and 720 Pittsburgh companies contributed to the 2008 campaign.

These donations are so vital, especially now, as United Way saw a 141 percent increase this year in calls to its Allegheny County HelpLine from families in need of assistance for housing, food or utility bills.
