FUNraising: ToonSeum part of new wave of small museums raising money online

The New York Times profiles museums using the website Kickstarter.com to raise money, and highlights the Cultural District's ToonSeum as a leader in the movement.

It states, "The ToonSeum recently introduced separate Kickstarter campaigns to raise money for two exhibits. One exhibit will display art from the anime classic Akira; the other will chronicle comic and cartoon dogs. The museum is seeking $13,500 for both exhibits; as of early March, 22, a total of $465 had been pledged.

"Joe Wos, executive director of the ToonSeum, said he was confident the museum would find enough backers before the deadlines in early April. He added that, in many ways, the Internet fund-raising was a backward approach because of its emphasis on smaller donations rather than larger ones."

"Before Kickstarter, we did what every museum did, and relied on local foundations, sponsorships and the general operating budget for sizable contributions to fund new exhibits," Wos said. "Under this new approach, we're aiming for smaller donations first, and we'll rely on those larger sources only if we need to do so down the road."
