After a contentious start to a recent Urban Redevelopment Board meeting, when Community Empowerment Association founder Rashad Byrdsong accused the board of ignoring Homewood, a positive shift began to take place. In addition to the the CEA making progress on the purchase of a building, the board approved $100,000 in predevelopment funding for the construction of Cafe 524. Cafe 524 will be a highly advanced sustainable building with a geothermal energy system. The building will have offices on the upper floors, with a cafe on the ground floor, which will source goods and supplies from local Westinghouse High School's culinary program, making the new building a catalyst for community growth.
