Ah, the magnificent sponge; that versatile cleaning machine wrought from the depths of the sea. Little known fact: sponges, while wonderful sanitary devices, if left inside of you during surgery will make you incredibly unclean and filled with poison. In an effort to quell human sponge toxicity, Philadelphia's Mercy Hospital has acquired the SmartWandDTX from Pittsburgh medical technology company ClearCount. The SmartWandDTX is an innovative device, designed to not only detect missing sponges in the operating room, but also inform surgeons about the particular organs in which they may have misplaced said sponges.
