In the Brookings Institution's recent survey of the nation's 100 largest metropolitan areas, Pittsburgh was ranked in the top 20.
It is the 18th strongest-performing metro area in the country. San Antonio, Tex. takes the top spot.
The study looked at the impact of the recession, finding that U.S. cities have been impacted at "radically varying levels." Criteria included: employment and unemployment rates, wages, gross metropolitan product, housing prices and foreclosure rates.
