Pittsburgh-based Wellspring Worldwide occupies a unique niche, with its two Internet flagship products helping universities, small businesses and non-profits worldwide translate intellectual property into successful commercial enterprises.
Wellspring was founded in 2003 by Robert Lowe, CEO and president, and director of Enterprise Creation at Carnegie Mellon University where he helped to nurture startups. Since then Lowe has been hopping from Pittsburgh to Chicago, Portugal and London to establish Wellspring worldwide.
“Although the software continues to drive our
business," says Lowe, "we have been able to get deeply involved in
training and consulting for organizations. We help clients answer the
two questions: what's our impact on the institute/city/region, and how
can we increase our long-term economic impact on the region?"
The company has grown 300 percent a year in revenue and anticipates hitting 450 percent annual revenue growth this year. With an office in the Terminal Building on the South Side, Wellspring currently employs 15, plans to hire 5 in the near future and hopes to double to 40 in the next two years.
Last month Wellspring brought two "world-class" executives to the firm, says Lowe. Jennifer Dyer and Dominic Bowles will focus on growing existing and new markets for the company’s knowledge management products and oversee the opening of operations in San Diego, California, and Cambridge, United Kingdom.
Dyer brings more than 15 years of leadership in technology transfer at The Scripps Research Institute. Bowles, who began his career in the UK and has 17 years of business development experience, will oversee the European market.
