Lofty holiday shopping at Viaduct Studios this Saturday

Shopping outside of the mall box? Viaduct Studios is celebrating the holidays with an open house and art sale this Saturday, Dec. 5th from 3 to 8 p.m.

Six studios will be open, featuring the work of Michael Passafiume, Joe Martin, Greg Balthus, Suz Pisano, Kirby Krieger, John Fleenor, Helen Perilloux, and Emily Klein. Peruse the lofts for original goodies ranging from serious art-- painting, pottery, apparel and robotics-- to tasty treats and drinks. Or visit the robotic workshop where Chalkbot was built, the rolling, street-painting robot that debuted at the Tour de France.

Housed downtown in a former 1920s-era warehouse at 622 Second Ave, Viaduct was transformed into a hub for local artists and musicians by real estate agent and writer Rick Schweikert. Thanks to the reasonable rents, Schweikert has helped to support a thriving industrial arts space that brings original theater, live music and the visual arts together under one roof.

"Places like the Viaduct are what make Pittsburgh a great city for artists, art and innovation," says artist and resident John Fleenor. "The owners have made a successful business model out of offering work space for creative enterprises, everything from musicians practice spaces to robotics laboratories."
