Pittsburgh’s Thorley Industries rolls out kiddie gear—the Mamaroo too

Thorley Industries’ audio bouncy seat for infants won a national award at this month’s Juvenile Products Manufacturing Association conference.

The Mamaroo is the one of three new products that will roll out in retail stores in the next six months. The seat, which sits on a pedestal and swings the baby like a kangeroo pouch while cooing soothing sounds from nature—a campfire, the ocean, a heartbeat or your own creation—was one of 10 selected from a field of 400 for the Innovation Award, says Rob Daley, CEO.

Thorley, which includes CTO and entrepreneur-inventor Henry Thorne, has been working with North Hills pediatrician Dr. Jim Tucker and five moms from Mt. Lebanon—4Moms plus a stealth mom—to develop the latest round of products, the long-awaited, robotically-powered folding stroller and a handheld electronic gadget that teaches parents how to teach infants to fall asleep.

The stroller, the Origami, collapses to less than half its original size with the touch of two buttons and battery power, Daley explains. The Goodnight Sleep Trainer is based on the pediatric premise that parents need to help their baby to learn how to fall asleep.

“A vast majority of parents see huge improvements in 3 days,” Daley says.

Thorley Industries, which posted its 8th consecutive quarter of growth, plans to move into new, yet to be disclosed headquarters. The company made waves last January when it landed a $215 million contract for yet to be released products with Hasbro. (For the Pop City story, click here.)
