Pittsburgh SciTech opened its door this month, joining a growing group of districts nationwide to offer students an innovative approach to secondary technology and science education.
Located in the heart of Oakland in the historic Frick building, the school welcomed 250 students in grades six through nine, a diverse group of students who have a unique opportunity to excel through an innovative approach to teaching and learning science, technology, engineering and math. One grade level will be added each year until SciTech reaches its 500 capacity in grades six through twelve.
"We exist to provide opportunities for our students to dream, discover and design," says Samuel Franklin of Pittsburgh Public Schools. "Our goal is for it to be more than a curriculum, but a launching pad for new ideas where students can experience what scientists and engineers do everyday."
Students are given an opportunity to study the fields of life science, environmental science, engineering and computer sciences. Once they reach high school, students may choose one field in which to focus for more in-depth study.
Students were admitted though a weighted lottery; there is presently a waiting list for every grade, Franklin says.
SciTech was founded on the belief that any student can succeed with right amount of time and support, he adds. "No one had to pass a test to get in or be straight A student, just motivated to want to experience the field. The students are happy and eager to be here."
