Make room Vocollect, Wexford’s Lucas Systems is growing and hiring and hopes to double in size in the next two years.

The 11-year-old voice logistics technology company started out as a partner with Vocollect, but quietly moved out on its own when it realized the market was moving away from proprietary hardware.

Lucas rewrote its software to work with Motorola and other open, mobile computing hardware devices, handheld computers or scanners that run on a Windows Mobile operating system. Today, Lucas is the second largest voice logistics company in North America and plans to grow by 25 to 30 percent this year

“It happened so quietly that nobody knows this story,” says Chris Sweeney, senior vice president of Lucas Systems. “In the midst of a pretty chaotic economy, we have continued to grow year over year. As the technology becomes more widely accepted, this will become a real Pittsburgh success story.”

Lucas' Jennifer voice-based solution for warehouse and distribution center operations helps customers to improve the accuracy and reliability of warehouse logistic tasks. The company currently employs 45 people and plans to pursue opportunities in Mexico, India and Taiwan.

Lucas services a variety of operations and industries, ranging from wholesale and retail to manufacturing, food and beverages, healthcare and consumer packaged goods, to name a few. Customers include CVS Pharmacy, Office Max, Oriental Trading Company and delias.
