Wearable health technology developed in Pittsburgh just got better.
BodyMedia, Inc., makers of an armband body monitoring system, has upgraded its
GoWear fit lifestyle and calorie management system with user-friendly features and online tools that help the wearer to watch calories and lose weight. (To read more about Body Media in Pop City, click

Launched commercially in 2008, the GoWear fit monitor wraps around the arm and has five features that track the number of steps taken, amount of calories burned, amount of physical activity expended, sleep duration and sleep efficiency with a 90 percent accuracy rate. The new additions include online daily food logging, MET level adjustments, which monitor the intensity level of your exercise or activity, and interactive updates that denote calories consumed versus calories burned.
“A lot of people think that they have to go to the gym to burn calories,” explains Ivo Stivoric, CTO of BodyMedia. “People are very surprised to learn how much everyday activities, from walking the stairs at work to gardening at home, really pile up to some significant calorie burn numbers that don’t involve working out in a gym. ”
“GoWear fit is very enticing to the user. It automatically logs your activity and compiles results,” adds Stivoric. “We get a lot of positive feedback from users saying they are really happy that we’ve added additional lifestyle parameters that educate them on their personal activity, sleep quality and their daily dietary choices.”
