Hard-to-recycle e-waste event keeps heavy metals out of landfills

Finally, a place to unload the VCR in your closet and the old analog TV.

A “Hard to Recycle” event that takes e-waste will be held at The Mall at Robinson on July 26th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the lower parking lot outside Sears.

The Pa. Resources Council and the Allegheny County Health Dept., in partnership with The Mall at Robinson, will collect Freon and non-Freon applications, e-waste, televisions, tires without rims, toner cartridges, cell phones, compact fluorescent light bulbs, mixed paper and cardboard.

Nearly 2 million tons of used electronics are discarded every year and nearly 128 cell phones are tossed away annually. Shipped off to a landfill, these gadgets can leach heavy metals such as lead into the ground when not disposed of properly.

All materials will be recycled and or refurbished.  Certified Freon removers will safely remove Freon, a refrigerant harmful to the ozone layer.  Tires will be shredded and turned into new products such as artificial turf and rubberized asphalt.  Electronics will be deconstructed safely and materials reused or recycled.

Disposals fees will range from $2 to $50.  Click here for more information.

The Mall at Robinson is located at 100 Robinson Centre Drive of Route 79.
