Watching and listening to podcasts just got easier.
Pittsburgh-based CastGrabber has launched what it says is the world’s first device to automatically download podcasts directly to an MP3 or Apple iPod without a personal computer.
More than 1.2 billion podcasts were downloaded last year, a number that is expected to increase, says John Hammer, president and CEO. CastGrabber provides a solution for those who use podcasts to keep up with current events, sports, or radio programming but don’t want the hassle of manually transferring the programs by hooking up to a computer.
By connecting the device’s Ethernet cable with the Internet, iPods and MP3 players automatically download selected podcasts while the device recharges. The selection is done through CastGrabber, iTunes software or online sites like podcastpickle.com. The only hitch is Mac-formatted iPhones, iPods, iTouch and Zune aren’t yet compatible with the system, but will be soon, Hammer says.
“CastGrabber helps ensure that users always have the most current programming,” Hammer adds. He figures the biggest users will be between the ages of 18 and 35 years, although young teens will use it to follow favorite programming. “It’s not for watching Gone with the Wind, that’s for sure,” Hammond laughs.
Formerly an engineer and investment officer with Innovation Works, Hammer launched the company in 2006. The company is staffed by 8 to 12 people. “Our world headquarters is in Squirrel Hill and the global research facility is on the South Side,” he jokes.
Hammer plans to expand and upgrade the product in the near future. The device is on sale now through HomeDepot.com and will be available in retail stores soon, Hammer says.
