More than 300 Pittsburgh-area students will get a detailed introduction to the topics and conflicts surrounding the G20 Summit this fall. The
World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh is organizing an impressively high-tech G20 Student Summit, headquartered at Fox Chapel Area High School, scheduled for one week prior to the real summit.
Students will hear from panelists who are experts on the issues, and can question them directly on subjects like economic development, energy and the environment. They will also meet for breakout sessions, examining policy questions from the perspectives of the various G20 nations, says Amiena Mahsoob, education program manager at the World Affairs Council. With the help of expert facilitators, the students will grapple with the issues, discovering first-hand how challenging it can be to agree on a course of action.
They will also, via webcasts and teleconferencing, talk with other students around the globe. And as the school year progresses, there will be ongoing events relating to the G20 and students will have a chance to address global issues here in the Pittsburgh area by volunteering. The World Affairs Council is also creating lesson plans and additional information for teachers.
Schools can register their students to participate at Fox Chapel or they can participate as a satellite delegation via webcast or videoconference from their school. Registration runs through Sept. 1 – details here.
Stay tuned: The World Affairs Council is planning additional G20-related informational events for the community. More on that in the coming weeks.
