Put those umbrellas away and grab a blanket for a week of live music under the stars. From the newly renovated Great Lawn at Point State Park to the galleries of the Cultural District, a roster of local and national acts, cutting-edge art and hands-on activities are ramping up Downtown's
Three Rivers Arts Festival (TRAF).
A live jukebox of musical styles and genres, this week's performance menu includes everything from country rock, Latin jazz and reggae, to indie pop, spoken word and African drumming. Channel your inner Bad Blake as Nashville legend Kris Kristofferson brings his distinct brand of rebellious country rock to TRAF's main stage on Friday, June 11.
Headlining the closing festivities on Sunday, June 13 is acclaimed singer-songwriter Patty Griffin. Plucked from the Boston coffeehouse scene during the early 1990s, Griffin has just released a selection of traditional gospel songs called
Downtown Church. Winner of the Americana Music Association's 2007 "Artist of the Year" award, Griffin has toured with Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch and Buddy Miller. Her songs have been covered by everyone from Kelly Clarkson to The Dixie Chicks.
This year, TRAF boasts an impressive lineup of documentary films at Downtown's
Harris Theater. Highlights include Hiroshi Teshigahara's
Antonio Gaudí, Don Argott's
The Art of the Steal, Banksy's
Exit Through the Giftshop, and Tom Donahue & Paul Hasegawa-Overacker's
Guest of Cindy Sherman.
Make your own Buddha with Joe Cooper-Silvis' interactive camera and video installation in Point State Park, examine everyday life in the Congo at SPACE and discover how a 14-foot kinetic sculpture is transforming wind into energy via spinning flower petals. Swing by the
Trust Arts Education Center to catch Attack Theatre's
Random Accumulated Memories and explore cutting-edge work culled from the
15 Minutes Gallery.
