Pop Filter Hot Pick: Mountain Top Music Festival
The Mountain Top Music Festival will be held in Grandview Park in Mount Washington starting at 1PM on Sunday.
WPTS Radio and Max K Agency will host the first incarnation of the Mountain Top Music Festival this Sun., June 8, at Mount Washington’s Grandview Park. The inaugural lineup boasts an impressive collection of young, enthusastic, regional bands that are starting to make names for themselves.
The fest will feature 12 Pennsylvania bands, 10 of which hail from Pittsburgh, while the remaining two call Philadelphia home. Pittsburgh acts include noodly/catchy math rock savants Legs Like Tree Trunks, earnest jangle rockers Nevada Color, and Stokes-ian anthem makers White Like Fire. Philadelphia is represented by suczzy power pop crafstman Drgn King and hooky, inde rock hearthrobs Cold Fronts.
For Monessen native Max Kovalchuk, head of Max K Agency and guitarist in the band Nevada Color, putting together his own music festival is something he’s been training for throughout his tenure at Point Park College. Between getting his B.S. in entertainment management, he interned and worked for Stage AE, Sony Music Entertainment, Live Nation and Drusky Entertainment handling booking and artist management.
When I first saw the festival site about two years ago, I knew I wanted to throw a concert there,” says Kovalchuk. “I've been booking bands in basements, bars, small venues and mid-level venues. I have been on both ends of the live music spectrum, working for a promoter as well as working for the band. All of these things have helped me a great deal in being able to prepare myself for putting on this music festival.”
Kovalchuk called on a cadre of bands he either worked with, played with, or simply knew through friends to fill out his lineup. The fact that all the groups are on the upswing in their young careers is a testament to Kovalchuk’s eye for talent.
“I wanted to book bands that I know are passionate about what they're doing,” says Kovalchuk. “I think that if you surround yourself [as an event organizer] with people who care about what they're doing and care about what other people are doing then it will make for a great time.”
