This week, in between hay rides and haunted houses, carve out some time for culture:

1. Kick off your Autumnal antics with the much anticipated Dia de los Muertos bash at the New Hazlett Theater. The All Souls action will keep revelers in the spirit from 10 p.m. until 2 a.m. with a creative twist on traditional Day of the Dead rituals, including a "dead celebrity contest," day-glo art, and performances by Attack Theatre and NAKA Entertainment.

2. Tis the season for slasher films, and this weekend boasts many must-see flicks. Friday's ticket is the "Super Trash Double Feature" at The Warhol, featuring David Durston's I Drink Your Blood (1970) and Ricky Lau's Mr. Vampire 4 (1988), plus exploitation expert Michael Bowen. In Dormont, the newly reopened Hollywood Theater is teaming up with Horror Realm to present a rare screening of the original version of Dawn of the Dead, filmed by zombie maestro George Romero at Monroeville Mall. The "Steel City Zombie Night" boasts a costume contest, trivia games and an appearance by Leonard Lies (a.k.a. "Machete Zombie").

4. For family-friendly fun, head to Carnegie Science Center on Oct. 31 to discover all things icky and educational. Roll up your costume's sleeves for mind-altering Frankenscience activities, indoor trick-or-treating and a Family Halloween Laser Show. Make grosser-than-gross wounds, glow-in-the-dark slime and spooky skeleton puzzles.

5. Craving sinister on-stage action? Don that costume and head to Bricolage Production Company for the Pittsburgh premiere of Neighborhood 3. Step into a suburban subdivision where teens become addicted to a video game populated by zombies. Also part of the horror play party? Free beer, corn hole and PS2 in the theater's game room.

Thirsty for more mayhem? Wrap up both naughty nights in Lawrenceville, with "Devil's Night" at new hipster handout, Round Corner Cantina, and "Nightmare on Butler Street" at New Amsterdam.
