Pop Filter Hot Pick: City Theatre presents Broadway comedy Seminar

.
.
If you're already hooked on NBC's hit show Smash, the new drama series revolving around the creation of a new Broadway musical, then you don't want to miss playwright Theresa Rebeck's Seminar at City Theatre.

Kicking off the New Year and continuing its 38th season, the witty Broadway comedy brings a heady blend of power, sex, and art to the Southside company's Mainstage venue. Directed by Tracy Brigden, Seminar runs through February 10th, with a special GREENROOM cast party with Pop City on Friday, February 1st.

Facing the facts

Think the title sound dry and academic? Think again. Welcome to Kate’s spacious rent-controlled apartment located on the hip Upper West Side of New York City. Its cast of characters are four aspiring young novelists, who meet weekly for a private writing seminar led by literary guru, Leonard, whose signature personality trait is being a harsh critic.

Theater-goers will be drawn in by the fast-paced witty repartee, as "insults fly, the truth stings and relationships are made and broken." Ultimately, the budding authors come to understand that the toughest part of writing fiction may in fact be facing the facts.

Starring in the play are Andy Bean, Nadia Gan, Daniel Gerroll, Rebecca Harris, and Charles Socarides. The production's design team includes Tony Ferrieri (scenic), Angela M. Vesco (costume), Andrew David Ostrowski (lighting), and Joe Pino (sound).

Revisiting Rebeck

Seminar marks the second of Rebeck’s works to be presented by City Theatre. In 2005, the company produced her one-woman comedy Bad Dates to rave reviews.

Her latest work Seminar spotlights Rebeck’s prowess at penning snappy smart dialogue. Via a small group of group unlikely acquaintances, the comedic work explores social interactions, human insecurities, power struggles, and sexual tension as
four budding writers attempt to make it in the cutthroat literary world.

In addition to Seminar--which nabbed the Outer Critics Circle and Drama League Nomination--Rebeck’s additional New York City productions include: The Scene, winner of a Dramalogue Nomination, The Water’s Edge, Bad Dates, The Butterfly Collection, Spike Heels, Loose Knit, and the Pulitzer finalist, Omnium Gatherum.

Rebeck has also produced feature films, such as Harriet the Spy, Gossip, Sunday on the Rocks, and Seducing Charlie Barker. Her numerous awards include a Peabody Award for her work on “NYPD Blue," a William Inge New Voices Playwriting Award and a PEN/Laura Pels Foundation Award.
