PHASE 4 Learning Center opened its third western Pennsylvania location on April 13th. Located at 5854 Baum Blvd. in
East Liberty, the 5,000 square-foot facility features the 3 Rivers Computer Clubhouse, a literacy center, 50 computer stations and a full kitchen. The center is partnering with the adjacent
Parental Stress Center on programs and services and working with downtown-based
3 Rivers Connect to run its computer facilities.
“We chose the location because of the tremendous need to serve kids in that area. We’re working with
Pittsburgh Public Schools and high schools right nearby,” says Terrie Suica-Reed, president and CEO of PHASE 4 Learning Center.
A private provider of alternative education for at-risk youth in grades 7-12, PHASE 4 focuses on academic, social, behavioral, and career development. Sessions include college visits, civic citizenship programs and job training. A non-traditional curriculum assists students with high school diploma requirements and features guest speakers from a variety of fields.
“There’s a lot of synergy and development happening in East Liberty, and we’re excited and honored to be a part of it,” says Suica-Reed. “It’s a beautiful space, with sandblasted original red brick, industrial ceilings, ergonomic desks and new technology.” Equipped to serve 150 students per day, the center received $50,000 from the
Heinz Endowments as well as assistance from the
CL Fund.
Since opening its first center in 2003, 1,000 students have gone through PHASE 4’s program; ninety-eight percent have graduated from high school, and one hundred percent have been placed in college, employment or military positions.
