St. Clair Hospital, located at 1000 Bower Hill Rd. in Mt. Lebanon, has received $487,000 in federal funding to support the expansion of its emergency department.
In order to accommodate a growing demand for emergency services in the southern Allegheny County and northern Washington County region, the 329-bed comprehensive hospital is currently constructing a new 18,000 square-foot emergency department.
One of the largest construction projects currently underway in the South Hills, the $13.5 million project will feature 45 patient treatment rooms, including acute adult treatment rooms, fast track rooms for minor illnesses and injuries, behavioral and mental health treatment rooms, and pediatric-equipped treatment rooms. All treatment rooms will be equipped with cardiac monitoring capabilities. The expansion will also accommodate the hospital's expanding advanced healthcare technology.
The new emergency department is being designed as a patient and family-centric space, with larger, more comfortable adult and pediatric waiting areas, increased natural light and way finding improvements. Project architect is
IKM; contractor is Carnegie-based
TEDCO. The state-of-the-art facility is expected to be completed during November of 2008, and will be equipped to serve 80,000 visitors each year.
In 2007, St. Clair Hospital’s emergency department served 50,564 patients; that number is expected to grow to 60,000 annual visits within the next five years. The South Hills’ largest employer, St. Clair is the only Pittsburgh area hospital to be named one of the
100 Best Places to Work in Pennsylvania for six consecutive years.
