36 years and still styling: Hair Plus finds new home in Downtown's Frick Building

After styling Downtown employees and residents for 36 years—19 of them at the Union Trust Building, Hair Plus salon owner Joseph Moschella has found a new home in the nearby Frick Building, which is owned by Rugby Realty Company.

Relocating Hair Plus next week, Moschella expects to welcome clients at 437 Grant St. by Feb. 23. When unsuccessful negotiations with his Union Trust Building landlord forced him to secure a new space within 30 days, Moschella enlisted the expertise of Grant Street Associates Retail Service Solutions. The firm conducted a market survey and quickly negotiated a new lease for Moschella at the 20-story office tower, which was designed by prominent Chicago firm, D. H. Burnham & Company.

The 600-square-foot salon offers full hair care services and manicures. “I wanted to stay Downtown—there’s no question about it. This is a beautiful building—it’s going to work out very well,” says Moschella, 56, who moved to Pittsburgh from southern Italy in 1972. “In 36 years, I’ve seen some ups and downs in the city. I have good feelings for Pittsburgh—the nights are more lively Downtown now.” Moschella's first salon was housed in the Standard Life Building on Smithfield St.

“We successfully relocated Joseph in a turn-key space at the Frick Building. One of the nice things is that the space previously existed as a salon—the timing was perfect. A lot of his clients are in the building,” says J.R. Yocco, with Grant Street. “We’re flirting with 90% occupancy, and have been for a while. It's predominantly a strong attorney mix—second is financial services. The retail space is 100% occupied."
