Goodwill Industries of Southwest Pennsylvania is moving its headquarters from its current location at 2600 East Carson Street on South Side to Lawrenceville in November.
"We've had our location on the South Side since 1967, and over the last several years we've learned that we have a number of inefficiencies in our building which would really be cost prohibitive to try and repair," explains David Tobiczyk, Vice President of Marketing and Development for
Goodwill.
The new space, located at 135 51st Street, is a 53,000 square foot warehouse previously used as a warehouse for UPMC, which Goodwill is leasing from the Rubinoff Company. Goodwill is installing a second floor into the facility, bringing the total square footage to 106,000 square feet. The design firm
Strada is in charge of the building's transformation.
"This is our new workforce development center, so the facility will include all of our local programming, such as education programming and our computer recycling programs," says Tobiczyk.
While Goodwill plans a movement of its entire staff from the South Side headquarters, the company plans to acquire the identical building next door at 125 51st Street in 2011, which will house a large computer retail store. According to Tobiczyk, that store will bring more jobs to Lawrenceville once it opens.
Goodwill's current seven story building on the South Side has been purchased by Burns & Scalo, who intend to transform it into a mixed use property, featuring 87 apartments and retail space.
