The Denis Theatre Foundation has launched a $3 million fundraising campaign to revive a much-beloved landmark located along Mt. Lebanon’s Washington Rd. business district.

Plans for the Denis Theatre—which closed in 2004 after operating continuously since 1937—include reopening the facility an art house specializing in independent, foreign and documentary films, and a cultural venue for lectures, student productions, children’s matinees, and business gatherings. During the 1960s and 1980s, the 1,200-seat, 17,000-square-foot Denis was divided into multiple theaters. The water-damaged facility requires a full makeover, including new heating and cooling systems, restrooms, seating, and theater equipment.

After being targeted for conversion to commercial space—or worse yet, the wrecking ball—local tech CEO D. Raja purchased the Denis for $678,500 and teamed up with active community member Anne Kemerer to start the foundation and complete a feasibility study. “This is a catalyst to spark economic development,” says Raja, who is now a Mt. Lebanon commissioner, and won’t be directly involved in the project. “There will be a lot more activity along the street. It'll be a destination that’s an impetus for economic growth.” Along with wife Neeta, Raja donated $5,000 to the effort.

After soliciting proposals, the foundation selected Youngstown-based Balog Steines Hendricks & Manchester Architects. “We hope to become Pennsylvania’s first LEED-certified theater,” adds Kemerer, who consulted with theater construction expert Vince Porco.

Initial phases will involve cleanup, select demolition and design work. The theater’s small stage and balcony will also be restored. Kemerer hopes to partner with local businesses on a café area. A hardhat tour of the Denis will be led during Mt. Lebanon’s June 6 "First Fridays" event.
