Renovation of The Widows’ Home (WH), located at 308 North Taylor Avenue, will be complete by October 1. Built in 1843 as an orphanage, the historic structure later served as a home for Civil War widows.
Developed by Ralph A. Falbo and
Pennrose Properties the WH will offer apartments and townhouses available to a wide range of household sizes and income levels. Six of the property’s 24 units have been rented.
“We are very excited that the WH has been renovated as affordable rental property. We feel that Ralph Falbo has done a careful job maintaining its historical integrity. It is a landmark in the neighborhood,” says Rebecca Davidson-Wagner of the
Central Northside Neighborhood Council (CNNC).
The WH contains nine one-bedroom apartments in a three-story mid-rise building and 15 two-bedroom, two-story townhouses that face an open courtyard. Townhouses are 1,000 square feet and apartments are 650 square feet.
Amenities include 12-foot ceilings, and new HVAC systems and kitchens. The WH, which features a community room, is located near bus lines and within walking distance to the North Shore and downtown.
“The WH is historic both in age and use. It is beautiful, and includes original architectural details and contemporary fixtures,” says Brenda Keirn of Ralph A. Falbo, Inc.
Landmark Design Associates designed the renovation and Mistick Construction is the contractor.
