The
YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh is partnering with
UPMC Health Plan to expand its Downtown presence with a new facility located at the
U.S. Steel Tower. The new 15,000-square-foot YMCA at U.S. Steel Tower will house the 14,000-square-foot UPMC Health Plan Wellness Center and serve as an extension of the YMCA’s Downtown Pittsburgh facility.
"It will be a full-blown YMCA. The wellness center is one component of many. It will have the latest and greatest tools in terms of technology, treadmills and ellipticals, strength and conditioning equipment, and individual rooms for spinning, pilates and yoga," says John Cardone, with the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh.
Expected to open during the summer of 2008, the new facility will be located on the concourse level of the USX Towers. "It will open doors for people who work and live on that side of town," adds Cardone, who says the new Y will also offer corporate wellness classes. Pittsburgh-based
DRS Architects is designing the one-story facility, which will be located in the tower's old auditorium.
The site will employ a full staff of wellness professionals and offer an extensive selection of classes and services, including nutrition, obesity, smoking cessation, physical therapy, and pre-and post-natal programming. The new site will also support the YMCA’s Activate Pittsburgh programming.
During the first quarter of 2009, the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh will move to its new location in the former
G.C. Murphy in Market Square. Cardone stresses that there will not be a lapse in services during the move.
