Though Las Vegas hasn’t traded its infamous Cadillac desert for the Prius waiting list quite yet, the enormous new Project CityCenter by MGM Mirage nevertheless hopes to be the largest LEED-certified development in the United States.
In this ambitious undertaking, a small Allegheny County construction-services company is playing a key role.
North Hills-based Clearview Project Services Company has been serving as “green build” advisor to the project, assisting lead contractor Perini Building Company on Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. With a $6 billion budget and an anticipated 18 million square feet, Project CityCenter is the largest privately financed development -- green or otherwise -- in the United States.
Scheduled for completion in 2009, the mixed-use development will include a casino, hotels, offices and permanent residences in 15 to 18 buildings, many designed by international architects such as Cesar Pelli and Associates and Rafael Vinoly Architects.
Among the development’s green features are garden roofs, water-reclamation systems and energy-efficient heating and cooling.
Clearview President Chris Klehm says his business has formed a second company called Greenview to handle its Las Vegas work, partnering with Vegas native Pamela Vilkin.
“They’re seeking to develop a more urban-type landscape in the center of Las Vegas,” says Klehm, “to think less about casinos and actually build a city.”
