Sausalido bistro brings Napa Valley dining, catering to Pittsburgh's Little Italy

Sausalido gourmet bistro is bringing the Napa Valley to Bloomfield.

Located at 4621 Liberty Ave., the 1200-square-foot BYOB eatery features seating for 40, outdoor tables and a second-floor dining room that can be reserved for parties.

Owner Nicholas Mineo, who studied hospitality management and business at Ohio State University, has the restaurant industry in his DNA. Mineo, whose cousins run the famed Pittsburgh pizza chain, returned to Pittsburgh in 2003 to run his family’s Shadyside Deli, which he transformed into a successful catering company serving high-profile clients including the Toronto Maple Leafs and Rolling Stones.

“I was in the business out of the womb. I don’t know anything else,” says Mineo, who first visited Pittsburgh’s produce yards at age five with his grandfather. “My love and talents as a chef became a really good profession. It was time for me to open a high-end gourmet bistro with fresh ingredients and value driven prices.”

Named to honor California cuisine and Mineo’s grandfather Lido, Sausalido features entrees such as orange balsamic-glazed duck and Frisco seafood cavatappi. Its contemporary rustic décor features slate floors, stone tile, a copper palette, and local art.

“Bloomfield is under the radar. It’s known for its diversity of good food, and we’re turning it up a notch,” adds Mineo, 27. “We complement the neighborhood and aren’t competing. Sausalido is here to make Bloomfield a place for fine dining.”

Executive Chef and Bloomfield native Michael Simpson was trained at Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY. Sausalido also offers full-service catering.
