Cut and Sew design space adds flair to East Liberty, newest Werner Building tenant

New design workshop Cut & Sew Studio is hosting a grand opening on Dec. 8-9. Located at 124 S. Highland Ave., on the second floor of East Liberty’s Werner Building, the 780 square-foot studio offers group classes, private instruction, and open studio time for all skill levels.

Owned by Catherine Batcho, the fully equipped sewing studio promotes a creative learning environment. Projects will vary from making a simple pillow to using commercial clothing patterns to transforming old jeans into new skirts.

After relocating to Pittsburgh in January, Batcho was drawn to East Liberty. “I wanted to be part of the new life that is rebuilding this community. It was an ideal spot to start my sewing studio because of its central location in a growing business district, as well as its close proximity to many other distinct neighborhoods,” says Batcho, who studied fashion design at Philadelphia University and honed her skills working for Philadelphia bridal designer Maria Romia and New York-based Liz Claiborne. “I was first attracted to the Werner Building because of its beauty. There are several other incredible businesses in the building. The open floor plan and high ceilings with large windows were exactly what I was looking for.”
