78,000 sf Century Building targeted for new 61-unit loft project

Downtown’s 78,000-square-foot Century Building will be the site of a new loft project developed by The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and TREK Development Group. Located at 137 Seventh St., the 12-story project will feature 61 units ranging from studio apartments to one- and two-bedroom lofts. Grille On Seventh will remain as the building’s ground floor tenant. Construction will start during the spring of 2008.

The project is part of efforts made by The Working Group on Downtown Housing, founded in 1998, to develop projects that integrate mixed incomes and encourage developers to allocate up to 20% of their total units for workforce and affordable housing. Monthly rents at the Century Building will range from $550 to $1,500. "The groundwork for this new development is a result of the commitment of the Working Group on Downtown Housing," says David DeSimone, Vice President of Operations and General Counsel for The Cultural Trust. "As a complement to the great mix of residential offerings in the Cultural District, the Century Building adds to the critical mass of activity that is gaining momentum everyday."

Architects Julie Eizenberg and Hank Koning of Santa Monica, CA, are designing the lofts. The project will be managed by William Gatti Jr., president of TREK Development Group, and will seek LEED certification. The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust provided financing for the property acquisition.

Constructed in 1906-1907 by the Century Land Company and designed by Pittsburgh firm Rutan and Russell, the Century Building is eligible to be listed on the National Register of Historical Places.
