Image Box Productions sets up shop at 4933 Penn

Pittsburgh-based design firm Image Box Productions, Inc. has occupied its new offices at 4933 Penn Avenue.

The 2,100 square-foot property includes a first floor art gallery, second floor offices and a third floor apartment now rented to a local photographer.

“The space is a boon to business,” says John Mahood, who founded Image Box as a home-based company in 2002. “Having the ability to now have a place for staff is a huge advantage.”

The building features a glass façade, two-story garage door, deck and balconies. Red Star Ironworks designed interior and exterior metal work, including banisters, railings, stairways and the property’s distinctive iron gate.

Mahood, 41, cites affordability and the avenue's monthly Ublurred gallery crawl series as reasons behind his move.

“Now that we are up here, we love it and have made a lot of friends,” says Mahood of the Penn Avenue arts district. “It’s working out amazingly well; the neighborhood is cool and a lot of fun.”

Mahood purchased the property from the Bloomfield-Garfield Corporation for $175,000. Architects Loysen + Kreuthmeier designed the space. “I furnished it and designed the layout to go with what the architects did,” says Mahood, a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh. The renovation cost approximately $260,000.

Image Box offers a variety of services to local and regional clients, including design for print and web media, photography and Internet marketing.
