One of Pittsburgh's best kept secrets may be Education Management Corp., or
EDMC, one of the largest providers of private post-secondary education in North America.
Based in Pittsburgh, EDMC is not only one of the fastest growing companies here, but is a major employer with 19,000 full-time, part-time and adjunct faculty and staff. Last December, EDMC announced a major expansion in Allegheny County, retaining more than 2,500 existing jobs and creating 600 new ones in the next three years. The $30 million expansion is due to increased enrollments; EDMC has more than 136,000 students at 93 locations in 28 U.S. states and Canada.
The 40-year-old institution offers a broad range of career-focused academic programs concentrated in the creative and applied arts, behavioral sciences, education, health sciences and business fields with an award of associate's through doctoral degrees as well as non-degree programs.
Allegheny County Economic Development is providing a $100,000 community development block grant and $150,000 in job training assistance. Pennsylvania is providing $5.75 million in funding, including a $3 million opportunity grant, $1.25 million in infrastructure assistance, $300,000 in job training assistance, and $1.2 million in job creation tax credits.
"EDMC is proud to open this next chapter in our rich history," says Todd Nelson, EDMC CEO. "I am pleased our growth can continue, spurring even more economic development and job creation here in Allegheny County."
