Downtown & The Cultural District

We're not the only ones who think Pittsburgh rocks. The New York Times called it "a cool--dare we say hip-- city," noting the unique topography and natural beauty of the three rivers and rolling green hills. At the intersection of those rivers is where you'll find Downtown & the Cultural District. Pittsburgh's Downtown is booming with new residential buildings and this past year was named tops for a city our size in arts and culture. Each year, more than 1.5 million people drop in Downtown to take in more than 2,000 events.

Geographically and economically central, Downtown absorbs a 41 percent daytime population surge, the fourth highest among U.S. metro areas; what's more, 48 percent of Downtown workers arrive by transit. From Downtown, you can catch a bus or take the T to virtually anywhere in Allegheny County – the vast majority of Port Authority's approximately 100 routes travel to or through the Golden Triangle. (For a list of routes, visit the Schedules section of the Port Authority Web site.)

Architecturally, there are many gems, from the H.H. Richardson-designed courthouse to the new, green convention center. And Market Square in the heart of it all is undergoing new design while new venues are moving in and garage-style windows open to the outdoors in warm weather. It's Paris in Pittsburgh!  Meanwhile, people are scooping up the many new and exciting condos. All this in a downtown area that is conveniently compact and walkable and safe--and across the river from the most beautiful ballpark in the country. For shopping, great dining and a multitude of arts events, Downtown Pittsburgh is like no other place--dare we say--in the world.
