Mt. Lebanon

This first-ring suburb six miles south of Pittsburgh is as well known for its impressive architecture, ranging from grand Tudors to irresistible bungalows, as it is for its community spirit and Blue Ribbon schools. With seven walkable elementary schools, the T, a trolley line that runs conveniently through town, and three distinct business districts Mt. Lebanon is in some ways more urban than suburban. It has that rare blend of sophistication and small town charm. Despite its reputation as upscale, you'll find a surprising range of housing, from apartments and condos to senior living throughout the rolling hills and bricked streets of the community.

Mt. Lebanon is home to St. Clair Hospital, the three-level Galleria, scads of shops and eclectic restaurants as well as an impressive modern library and a nine-hole golf course deemed a National Historic Landmark. With clay tennis courts under protective bubbles and a centrally located recreation center, there's no lack of activity here. And the well-read 80-page monthly Mtl magazine, mailed free to all households, keeps everyone up to date on community news, activities, schedules and registrations.

While tree-lined sidewalks encourage walking, many of the older homes feature welcoming porches to enhance neighborly relations. And if the neighbors aren't getting along they can always call on the community relations board for help.

While the schools garner most of the press, the public services, from speedy respondent times to snow removal and convenient curbside recycling, keeps the 33,000 residents content. With all its distinction, Mt. Lebanon is a well-oiled machine that elevates community service to an art form. They may come for the schools but they linger long after their kids graduate.

Getting around: Mt. Lebanon residents can head Downtown using the T or the bus, including the 36 route along Cedar Boulevard and the 41 along Bower Hill Road. The 42 bus route provides direct service to Oakland from Bower Hill Road, while the 35 Sunset Hills route offers local service between Dormont Junction T Station and Whitehall.
